UNIQLO, a global fashion retailer, is taking significant steps to promote workplace inclusivity in Malaysia through its partnership with Early Autism Project (EAP) Malaysia. This collaboration focuses on empowering employees with the skills needed to engage and support individuals with disabilities, both within the workforce and the community.

EAP Malaysia, a specialist in autism behavioral therapy, provides customized programs using the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) approach. Since December, EAP has been conducting training for UNIQLO Malaysia employees, helping them better understand and support individuals with diverse needs.

Evelyn Tan, UNIQLO’s Director of Legal and Sustainability, spoke about the initiative’s goals and its broader impact on creating an inclusive environment for everyone.

Empowering Store Managers Through Training

Tan explained that the primary aim of the partnership is to provide store managers with specialized training, enabling them to engage effectively with individuals with disabilities.

“Our focus is on equipping our employees with the right skills to foster an environment that welcomes and supports everyone, whether they are part of our team or our customer base,” she said. She added that UNIQLO hopes this partnership will set a benchmark for accessibility in the retail industry.

Currently, UNIQLO Malaysia employs 27 individuals with disabilities across its nationwide stores, with plans to increase these numbers as the company continues to grow.

Comprehensive Training with EAP

The training sessions conducted by EAP aim to build employees’ confidence and understanding, equipping them with practical strategies to support individuals with disabilities effectively.

“Through this program, our team gains the confidence to navigate different situations and deliver tailored service to meet the unique needs of each customer,” Tan said.

EAP Director Jochebed Isaacs elaborated that the training covers communication techniques, accessibility considerations, and fostering an inclusive workplace culture.

Improving Store Accessibility

UNIQLO is also enhancing the physical accessibility of its stores, with the Damansara Avenue Square outlet serving as an example. The store features universal fitting rooms, wheelchair-friendly facilities, and reserved parking spaces for customers with disabilities.

However, Tan stressed that inclusivity isn’t solely about infrastructure. “It’s about cultivating a mindset that ensures everyone feels valued and supported, whether they are shopping with us or working alongside us,” she noted.

Inclusive Hiring Practices

UNIQLO Malaysia adopts an inclusive approach to hiring, focusing on an individual’s ability to perform tasks independently with reasonable accommodations. There are no strict limitations on the severity of disabilities when considering candidates.

Tan emphasized that all employees, including those with disabilities, receive equal compensation, benefits, and opportunities for career growth. Personalized accommodations and job coaching are also provided to ensure every employee can thrive in their role.

Collaborations to Broaden Opportunities

To address employment challenges faced by individuals with autism, UNIQLO Malaysia has partnered with Enabling Academy (EA), a program by Gamuda Berhad designed to help adults with autism transition into employment.

As part of this partnership, UNIQLO offers a Retail Training Course that combines theoretical learning with hands-on store experience. This program is led by employees with disabilities, who provide trainees with practical advice and insights.

Several graduates of the EA program have successfully joined UNIQLO’s workforce, and the company remains committed to expanding these efforts. Tan also expressed openness to collaborating with other organizations to create more meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
