Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has credited Barisan Nasional (BN) for playing a crucial role in fostering political stability in the state, which he believes has been key to the effective functioning of the government. As a prominent leader in the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and a member of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, Chow emphasized the value of the partnership between PH and BN in ensuring steady governance and progress in Penang.
At the Penang MIC Deepavali open house, Chow expressed his appreciation for BN’s contributions, particularly during the 2023 state elections. He acknowledged the efforts of BN’s component parties, including MIC, in supporting his administration and advancing initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Penang’s residents.
“Political stability is vital for a government to carry out its duties. Thanks to this collaboration, we’ve been able to focus on economic and social growth that directly benefits the people,” Chow said.
Chow further highlighted the strength of the unity government formed through the cooperation of PH, BN, and other parties, crediting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership for inspiring both national and international confidence in the government’s stability.
He also praised Musa Sheikh Fadzir, Penang BN and Umno chief, for his efforts in strengthening the relationship between BN and PH. "The results of the 2023 state election show how effective our unity is. This partnership has led to great success," he added.
In the 2023 state elections, the PH-BN alliance won 29 of the 40 seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) claimed 11. DAP secured all 19 seats it contested; PKR took seven of 13, and Amanah retained one of its two seats. BN won two of the six seats it contested, with Rashidi Zinol from Sungai Acheh joining Chow’s state executive council.
Looking ahead, Chow stressed the importance of continued collaboration between PH and BN to address future challenges, including the upcoming general election in three years.
Chow also shared his gratitude for being part of Penang MIC’s first Deepavali celebration in 15 years, where MIC’s state chief J Dhinagaran and party members surprised him with a flower garland to mark his 65th birthday, celebrated the day before.
Former Penang Chief Minister and DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng also attended, underscoring the unity and shared commitment to Penang’s ongoing development.
